How to Get Your First 100 App Users Without Ads
The zero budget playbook I use for every launch, from app store search to Reddit to 20 direct messages, written for builders with a day job
Your first 100 users are not a marketing problem
They are a finding problem
Somewhere there are 100 people who already feel the pain your app solves
Your job is to stand where they already look, not to shout louder than everyone else
I have shipped 14 apps next to a full time job and crossed 100K users across them
None of that started with an ad budget
This is the playbook I run for every launch now
Why the first 100 are a different game
The first 100 users are not about scale
They are about proof
Proof that a stranger will install it, understand it and come back tomorrow
That changes what you should spend time on
Forget growth hacks built for apps with a million users
Pick channels where a solo builder can win with effort instead of money
Rule of thumb: if a channel needs a budget to start, it is not a first 100 channel
Start where people already search
Most people find apps by typing a problem into the store search bar
Apple says almost 65% of App Store downloads happen directly after a search (Apple Ads)
It also says 70% of App Store visitors use search to discover apps (Apple Ads)
So before you post anywhere, fix the listing
Put the main problem in the title and subtitle, in the words users actually use
Read the 1 and 2 star reviews of the top 10 competing apps and steal their vocabulary
Make the first two screenshots explain the outcome, not the features
A listing that ranks for one long tail search can bring a trickle of users every single day
That trickle is how most of my apps got their first users while I slept
Pick 2 channels, not 15
The mistake I see most is trying every channel for one day each
Nothing works in one day
Pick two channels and give each of them two focused weeks
Here is how I think about the options when I have 1 to 2 hours a night
The 5 channels that work at zero budget
1 Your store listing
Covered above, and it keeps working after you stop
Revisit it every two weeks with what new users tell you
2 Twenty direct messages
Find 20 people who publicly complained about the exact problem
Search X, Reddit and niche forums for the complaint in plain words
Send each one a short, honest note with the link and ask for blunt feedback
Most will ignore you
The few who reply become your first loyal users and your best source of copy
3 Reddit, done right
Reddit hates promotion and loves useful people
Answer questions in your niche for a week before you ever mention the app
When you do share it, share the story of why you built it and what you learned
Read every rule of the subreddit first, some ban self promotion completely
4 Building in public
Post what you shipped, what broke and the real numbers
It is slow at the start because you have no audience
It compounds, and it turns every future launch into a warm launch
5 Your other apps
If you have shipped before, your old users are the cheapest channel you own
A small card inside an existing app can send more installs than a week of posting
This is why I keep every app I ship alive, even the small ones
A 14 day plan you can run after work
| Days | Focus | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Fix the store listing | Title, subtitle and first two screenshots rewritten |
| 4 to 7 | 20 direct messages | 20 sent, every reply logged |
| 8 to 12 | One community | 5 genuinely useful answers, then one story post |
| 13 to 14 | Review | You know which channel gets the next two weeks |
Keep a simple sheet with the source of every install you can trace
After 14 days the pattern is usually obvious
What not to do
Do not buy installs
They inflate the numbers and teach you nothing about real users
Do not launch on ten directories on the same day and call it marketing
Do not wait for the app to feel finished, it never will
Keep the loop short
Ship, ask, fix, repeat
Your first 100 users will tell you what the next 1,000 need
Listen to them more than to any growth thread
